Producing a reference level full-range speaker is a daunting task. With the increase in size and number of drivers, the importance of proper execution increases exponentially. With The Joule series all options were on the table, only after evaluating the world’s best drivers and researching new cabinet materials did we start prototyping the design. Finally after nearly 2 years of development and multiple prototypes was The Joule Black born.
Like all models in the Vapor lineup, we begin by building the perfect cabinet. And with the Joule, the cabinet is a work of art all by itself. The construction consists of two independent pieces for the bass driver cabinet, and for the midrange/tweeter cabinet. Each piece isolated from the other via Herbie’s Fat Dots. The bottom bass section is a stacked Birch-ply construction, with a tapering Transmission Line integrated into the CNC cuts. Using the CNC and assembling the cabinet this way not only gives incredible strength, but allows us to give the Transmission Line the ideal amount of taper from beginning to end. The top section is also CNC cut stacked Birch-ply made in the same shape as the Cirrus cabinet, thus allowing us to take advantage of the Finite Element optimization that was engineered into that shape. The front baffle is made of 8 layers of high-density thermoplastic and aluminum sheet, which form an incredibly dense and strong launch platform for the music signal that is also well damped. To blend it all together visually are complex CNC’d 3 dimensional shapes, end result is a stunning visual creation.
And the drivers are just as beautiful as the cabinet. Providing the bottom end foundation is the Class Leading AudioTechnology 10C77 Sandwich Cone woofer. This woofer is an example of what can be built when cost is no object, and provides bass speed and impact unmatched by any other. The midrange is the Accuton C173-6-090, Neo motor Ceramic cone. Those familiar know it as the best pure midrange available, what sets it apart is the incredibly dynamic and engaging presentation it delivers. And topping it all off is the RAAL 140-15D, in our minds the finest tweeter to be found at any price!
These World-Class drivers are then all blended masterfully. The result is not only an incredible loudspeaker, but the finest speaker we’ve ever heard at any price. The ability to easily show layering of harmonics is unlike anything you’ve likely ever heard before, and truly must be heard to believe. And the bass foundation is better than the vast majority of stand-alone subwoofers can provide. The Joule has it all!
To top it all off only the finest components are used throughout the build such as Clarity MR Capacitors, Jensen 12ga wax/paper inductors, and Duelund resistors. The Joule White is easily capable of differentiating sonic changes of crossover components, so we’ve chosen some of the finest as our starting point.
Black vs. White
Here at Vapor Audio we realize that there’s no such thing as “right” for everyone. When dealing with perception of a human sense, individual taste is all that matters. To give customers options, and ability to fit our designs to their taste, we offer most speakers in Black and White versions. Tonally they will be nearly identical, afterall they are both voiced by the same set of human ears. But the difference is what one might expect from a soft cone woofer versus a hard cone. Black versions offer softer cone paper drivers, while White versions offer harder ceramic cone drivers. The softer cone will smooth transients giving a warmer, more romantic presentation. The harder cone will give a very fast delivery of transients and a more lively presenation, with added detail retrieval.
It’s important to note the White is never forward or fatiguing, and the Black is never reticent or overly laid-back. Black and White offer different versions of essentially the same sound, options are a good thing. And with each the crossover optimized for the individual requirements of the unique driver compliment.
